Mechanical Engineering Systems

Mechanical Engineering Systems
by Richard Gentle, Peter Edwards, Bill Bolton
ISBN 0 7506 5213 6

The philosophy is to provide a series of complementary texts which can be tailored to the actual courses being run – allowing the flexibility for course designers to take into account ‘local’ issues, such as areas of particular staff expertise and interest, while being able to demonstrate the depth and breadth of course material referenced to a common framework. The series is designed to cover material in the core texts which approximately corresponds to the first year of study with module texts focussing on individual topics to second and final year level. While the general structure of each of the texts is common, the styles are quite different, reflecting best practice in their areas. For example Mechanical Engineering Systems adopts a ‘tell – show – do’ approach, allowing students to work independently as well as in class, whereas Business Skills for Engineers and Technologists adopts a ‘framework’ approach, setting the context and boundaries and providing opportunities for discussion.

Digital Systems Design with FPGAs and CPLDs

Digital Systems Design with FPGAs and CPLDs
Author: Ian Grout
Publisher: Newnes, 2008
ISBN-13: 978-0-7506-8397-5
Pages: 763

Overview
The aim of this book is to provide a reference source with worked examples in the area of electronic circuit design using programmable logic. In particular, field programmable gate arrays and complex programmable logic devices will be presented and examples of such devices provided.

The choice whether to use a software-programmed processor or hardware-configured programmable logic device is not a simple one, and many decisions figure into evaluating the pros and cons of a particular implementation prior to making a final decision. This book will provide an insight into the design capabilities and aspects relating to the design decisions for programmable logic so that an informed decision can be made.

Fortunately, programmable logic provides the power of programmability with the power of hardware speed by providing an IC with built-in digital electronic circuitry that is configured by the user for a particular application. Many devices can be reconfigured for different applications. Today, two main types of programmable logic ICs are commonly used: the field programmable gate array (FPGA) and complex programmable logic device (CPLD).

Hacker Dictionary

Webster's New World - Hacker Dictionary
Author : Bernadette Schell and Clemens Martin
Publisher : Wiley Publishing, Inc.
2006
ISBN-13: 978-0-470-04752-1
ISBN-10: 0-470-04752-6

This book attempts to take a novel approach to the presentation and understanding of a controversial topic in modern-day society: hacking versus cracking. The perception of this bi-modal activity is as controversial as the process itself—with many in society confusing the positive attributes of hackers with the criminal activities of crackers. This dictionary tries to balance the two sides of the equation: the White Hat or the positive side of hacking with the Black Hat or the negative side of cracking.

This dictionary is written for general readers, students who want to learn about hackers and crackers, and business leaders who want to become more knowledgeable about the IT security field to keep their enterprises financially stable and to be proactive against intrusive cyber-attackers. For those wanting to learn beyond our entries (which have been grouped into general terms, legal terms, legal cases, and person), we have provided further readings under each entry and at the end of the dictionary. The entries have been compiled by two experts in the field of information technology security and hacker profiling. Hundreds of entries have been included to provide explanations and descriptions of key information technology security concepts, organizations, case studies, laws, theories, and tools. These entries describe hacktivist, creative hacker, and criminal cracker activities associated with a wide range of cyber exploits.

Although we acknowledge that we cannot include every item of significance to the topics of hacking and cracking in a one-volume reference book on this intriguing topic, we have attempted to be as comprehensive as possible, given space limitations.Though we have focused on the past 35 years in particular, we note that the foundations of hacking and cracking existed at the commencement of computer innovations in the earlier parts of the previous century.

WiMAX/MobileFi - Advanced Research and Technology

WiMAX/MobileFi
Advanced Research and Technology
Edited by Yang Xiao
Page: 450

IEEE 802.16 working group was set up in 1999 to develop a new standard for broadband wireless access (BWA) and published the fi rst IEEE 802.16 standard in October 2001. An industrial association, namely worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) forum was formed to promote the 802.16 standards by defi ning the interoperability specifi cations between 802.16 products from different vendors. Th us, the IEEE 802.16 networks are also often referred to as WiMAX networks. In October 2004, the new standard 802.16-2004 was published, which is actually an amalgamation of 802.16 and 802.16a. Recently, the 802.16e standard was also ratifi ed in December 2005 by allowing the upgrade from fi xed BWA systems to mobile service provision up to vehicular speeds.

WiMAX provides a worldwide revolution in BWA including both fixed and mobile handsets. Th is book addresses many research-oriented issues in WiMAX such as connection admission control, integration with WiFi networks, quality of service (QoS) support, security issues, mobility support, terminal energy consumption, frequency reuse, confi guration issues, QoS architecture, handoff management, architecture for wireless IP networks, scheduling algorithms, mesh networks, load-balancing, radio resource management, systems deployment, performance modeling and analysis, and simulations. Th e goal of this edited book is to provide an excellent reference for students, faculty, researchers, and people in the industry related to these fields.

This edited book contains chapters written by experts on a wide range of topics that are associated with novel methods, techniques and applications of WiMAX systems. The book contains 17 chapters from prominent researchers working in these areas around the world. Although the covered topics may not be an exhaustive representation of all issues in WiMAX, they do represent a rich and useful sample of the strategies and contents.

Hacking Exposed ™ Web 2.0 Reviews
Security Secret and Solution
Author: Rich Cannings, Himanshu Dwivedi, Zane Lackey
Publisher: McGraw-Hill
ISBN: 0-07-149461-8
2008

BOOK OVERVIEW

The focus of this book is Web 2.0 application security. As mentioned, many Web 1.0
attacks are carried over to the Web 2.0 world. This book will show how this is exactly completed
specifically, how old attacks, such as XSS, will appear in Web 2.0 applications and
technologies. In addition to applying old attacks to this new technology, which is a theme in the security world, this book discusses how older technologies are being used more heavily on the web. Technologies such as ActiveX and Flash have been around for while, but they are being used more and more in Web 2.0 applications. Lastly, newer attack classes, such as cross-domain attacks, will be discussed. These attacks significantly increase the attack surface as end users can be attacked on one domain by visiting another.

Part I
Part I begins with common injection attacks. This chapter discusses injection attacks that
have been around for awhile, such as SQL injection, as well as new injection issues
prevalent in Web 2.0, such as XPath and XXE (XML eXternal Entity) attacks

Part II
The next part of the book, “Next Generation Web Application Attacks,” covers the new
attack classes that appear with Web 2.0 applications

Part III
The third part of this book is dedicated to AJAX. Since Web 2.0 web applications often
involve AJAX

Part IV
The last part of the book is on thick clients. The first chapter in this part covers ActiveX
security
