Overview
Network scanning is the process of discovering active hosts on the network and information about the hosts, such as operating system, active ports, services, and applications. Network scanning is comprised of the following four basic techniques:
  • Network Mapping Sending messages to a host that will generate a response
  • if the host is active
  • Port Scanning Sending messages to a specified port to determine if it is active
  • Service and Version Detection Sending specially crafted messages to active ports to generate responses that will indicate the type and version of service running
  • OS Detection Sending specially crafted messages to an active host to generate certain responses that will indicate the type of operating system running on the host
In addition to these basic techniques, advanced network scanners can perform other techniques such as masking the origin of the scanning, enabling timing features for stealthy scans, evading perimeter defenses such as firewalls, and providing reporting options.

IEEE 802.16 working group was set up in 1999 to develop a new standard for broadband wireless access (BWA) and published the fi rst IEEE 802.16 standard in October 2001. An industrial association, namely worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) forum was formed to promote the 802.16 standards by defi ning the interoperability specifi cations between 802.16 products from different vendors. Th us, the IEEE 802.16 networks are also often referred to as WiMAX networks. In October 2004, the new standard 802.16-2004 was published, which is actually an amalgamation of 802.16 and 802.16a. Recently, the 802.16e standard was also ratifi ed in December 2005 by allowing the upgrade from fi xed BWA systems to mobile service provision up to vehicular speeds.

WiMAX provides a worldwide revolution in BWA including both fixed and mobile handsets. Th is book addresses many research-oriented issues in WiMAX such as connection admission control, integration with WiFi networks, quality of service (QoS) support, security issues, mobility support, terminal energy consumption, frequency reuse, confi guration issues, QoS architecture, handoff management, architecture for wireless IP networks, scheduling algorithms, mesh networks, load-balancing, radio resource management, systems deployment, performance modeling and analysis, and simulations.
